It was a dream to re-imagine the grounds of this historic Spanish-style villa in San Marino. Designed with a central courtyard typical of Moorish architecture by architect George Washington Smith, the house provides a spectacular backdrop for traditional, whimsical, and lush California plantings. Imported large-scale palms and trees feel as though they have always been there, while beautiful underplanting and vines combine perfectly with the vintage hardscape. The clients were drawn to the exotic, resort-like experience one can find at hotels in Morocco and Palm Springs, so we had custom, hand-made, Moroccan-style tiles fabricated for the pool and spa, along with French limestone decking. All of these elements combined perfectly with the clients’ excellent taste in decor.
